Who we are

A biodiversity of Tajikistan can't recover on its own.

Public Organisation "Ganji Tabiat" is a non-governmental organisation that believes protecting biodiversity is crucial to maintaining balance in our ecosystems. It was established in February 2008 to help protect and conserve the wild flora of Tajikistan.

We focus our efforts on the local biodiversity of Tajikistan, including rare and endangered plant species — because losing them has consequences for wildlife and people alike that we believe are entirely avoidable.

"Our mission is to protect and conserve the native biodiversity of Tajikistan."

Our objectives

What we're working toward

Five commitments guide every project we run, from village household plots to national policy conversations.

01

Community knowledge

Improving living standards through ecological, legal, social, economic, cultural and medical knowledge-sharing.

02

Scientific research

Contributing to the development of scientific research into Tajikistan's wild plant species.

03

Landscape planning

Design and landscape planning that prioritises nature and biodiversity, and prevents atmospheric pollution.

04

Heritage sites

Maintaining and restoring ecologically important, historic and cultural heritage sites.

05

Government consultation

Advising local government projects on resolving ecological and biological problems.

Thematic areas

Four ways we protect Tajikistan's flora

PO "Ganji Tabiat" runs its activities across four connected thematic areas — from botanic-garden science to the schoolyard.

🌿

Conservation of biodiversity

  • Responding to climate change impacts on native flora
  • Domesticating edible & medicinal wild plants in pilot plots
  • Protecting species listed in the Red Book of Tajikistan
  • Establishing micro nurseries & demonstration plots
  • Protecting soil against erosion
  • Building an "Alive Red Book" demonstration plot
  • Scientific research with Kulob Botanic Garden & institutions
📣

Awareness raising campaigns

  • Raising ecological awareness among the population
  • Week of Open Doors at Kulob Botanic Garden
  • Publication of informative materials & brochures
  • Round tables, conferences & experience-sharing
  • Trainings and practical workshops
  • Agro-theatres for rural audiences
🎓

Community mobilisation

  • Contests, essays & competitions among students
  • Green patrols & nature corners at schools
  • Celebrating Earth Day every year
  • Week of Ecology at local schools
  • Working with traditional knowledge holders
🤝

Collaboration with local communities

  • Domesticating edible & medicinal wild plants directly in the household plots of local families — turning residents into long-term stewards of the species they once only harvested from the wild.

Domestication of wild edible & medicinal plants

📍 Dashtijum & Childukhtaron Jamoats, Khatlon Region

Between 2019 and 2020, our team collected seed from six wild species under conservation pressure, propagated them at Kulob Botanic Garden, and worked with farming households across Sh. Shohin and Muminobod districts to sow them directly in home plots — giving over 50 farmers, nearly half of them women, a stake in protecting the wild populations these plants came from.

Species in the programme

Allium stipitatum Allium giganteum Bunium persicum Ferula violacea Rheum maximoviczii Galagania fragrantissima
